I am trying to figure out how to install the fire rings properly on a Case 1030 head. Does any one know if they are absolutly needed and why?

Fire rings are installed with the lip down (If you understand what I mean, its kinda hard to explain) They are available in different thicknesses, you need to determine how much each sleeve protrudes above the surface of the block to know which ring to use if it's more than 2 thousandths use a standard thickness ring, if less than 2 thousandths use a thick ring that is marked with a blue stripe

Thanks Roger. So the more the sleeve sticks up the thicker the ring. Is the ring used to keep the gasket from blowing?

no use the thick ring if the sleeve sticks up LESS than .002 a standard one for more than .002 height

That's correct. And if I remember correctly, the bottom of the ring is flat and the top slightly rounded.

What if the protrusions are not the same? Should I put a thicker one on one cylinder and a thinner one on the other?

The fire ring IS the gasket that keeps the exhaust gases in. The lower the sleeve the thicker the fire ring, to make all cylinders have equal sealing pressure. DO IT VERY CAREFULLY AND YOU WILL BE REWARDED WITH A GOOD RUNNING MACHINE. I don't have the book in front of me but it seems to me that you have to be within .002 on each head.
