Paint color question (again)...VAC Project

I got some acrylic enamel from my DuPont jobber today, based on the code that DuPont technical gave me yesterday. Boy, it sure looks more red than orange.

Please forgive this first time in a long time Case owner, but the Case equipment I remember when I was a kid seemed more orange. Not as light as say an AC, but not red either. I know the shade is called "Flambeau Red". I just need some opinions about the correct color. I like to use acrylic enamel for durability in the Florida sun.

I can use this stuff for other items if it's the wrong shadde, so I really don't want to apply a lot of color that is too red. I have a VAC model and it's very orange. Is that the correct color ? If it is, I guess I should have taken that along and use it for color matching.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi know exactly what your going through. If you have found the correct code I'd appreciate an email with the code. Have a look at my posting on what I've been told.
Cheers Brad

F-I-T I just finished painting my dads VAC in July and used Ditzler 71282 delton paint . The body shop supplier said that this paint was 99.9 correct. The tractor color was perfect.
I hope to have a pic to put in case file soon.

Jerry:

Thanks for the info. Is Ditzler the same as PPG ? Because I used PPG DAR on my JD 70D, and my buddy owns a paint store where I buy my PPG stuff.

looks like I'll have him mix me a quart of the #71282.

Frank, I used some Van Sickle paint on a VAC a few years ago. It was the right shade but didn't have the gloss that an acryclic would have. Maybe buy a quart and paint a flat area and then take it in to a shop that can set one of those paint meters on it to get a formula for the acrylic paint instead of synthetic. Good luck Mark..

DCTom:

I think you're right on that DuPont code being wrong. Trouble is I went to new NAPA store here in town, and they said : "99L 3727 ? Heck that don't match any of our paint codes ! Our codes only have 5 digits. Are you sure that's a NAPA number ?". Then someone was good enough to offer that the code has been superseded by another NAPA product, but the 3727 is the same. I'm not sure I'll trust these guys to mix any paint. Doesn't look like they sell very much.

I've never run up against so many barriers. I don't even have a dealer in my area. The only utility type store is a TSC, but it's 75 mi. Guess I'll go there and get a quart of their color, spray it on some flat metal and have them tint to that.

Thanks !

Why don't you just use the regular Tractor and Impliment paint, and if you need a more durable finnish after, you could put several coats of clear coat....Just a thought....

Not a bad thought, but I've tried that in the past, and here's one of the problems. I don't have a dedicated paint booth, and the sytnetic enamels, even with hardener, take so much longer than acrylic enamels to set up that I have a real problem with dust and especially bugs. I have been using clear coat over the acrylic enamel after a wet sanding. I get a nice finish that way.

I just wish I was a little more informed about the shade of the Case color. I hate to go to a lot of trouble only to find out it stands out like a sore thumb in a line of tractors at a show. This tractor has been re-painted over the years, and I'm having trouble finding a remnant of original, non-sun bleached paint.

I guess I should get a quart of of the synthetic enamel and work at my acrylic to get it tinted the right color.

Any suggestions as to the "best" color among the tractor and implement enamels ?

Thanks !

Frank

Maybe you could just brush paint a small piece of metal, let it dry, and take a look at it in the sun. We painted our VAC with Power Red from a Case dealer...it is definitely orange during the day. But if you look at it in the dark, or twilight, it looks red. I can't remember what the paint looked like in the can, that was a few years ago.

Brandon:

I'm trying that right now. In fact, I'm experimenting a bit by mixing some yellow with it. It seems to bring it up from red. I won't say which yellow (ahem !) I used.....

Frank Flambeau red is the most light sensitive paint I have ever ran into. Put it in broad daylight and it looks near Allis orange.
Put it in the shed and it looks a lot more red than orange. Damn had to photograph. It wants to show red.
