Looking for some advice from the Case gurus....Picked up a '62 830 diesel with the Case-O-Matic a few weeks ago that needs alot of attention. Going through changing the fluids and was wondering the best approach to the C-O-M. Can or should I flush it with diesel or something else? Also what is the best fluid to use for replacement? I know you can use ATF, but the stuff that's in there now isn't red and wondered if it would be wise not to switch. This is my first experience with a C-O-M, but from what I have researched from this site it seems to be operating OK. None of the gauges work so I don't know pressures/temps. Thanks, jim

Jim,

You can use ATF, also acceptable are Case TCH fluid as well as Hy-Tran. System requires 18gal. Flush system with clean oil, I wouldn't reccommend using diesel fuel; not that it wouldn't work, but, if you are running the machine while flushing the fuel is to thin & doesn't contain enough lubricity. If you have any questions, feel free to call Steve or Nate @ (314) 966-6692. Thanks!

The torque converter housing only takes 4 gallons. I've never heard anyone here say anything about flushing it, but I'd agree with you about using the correct oil to flush it.

SHeiserman, Thanks...I was a little confused. I have the I&T manual and didn't think the clutch/transmission/ hydraulics were all a common system fluid wise.
Am I correct assumimg the transmission and hydraulics use common fluid. The manual says 10.5qts for hydraulics and 17/18gal. for the transmission, but when working on the tractor with hyd. pump and pto cover removed I started the machine for a few seconds and noticed fluid being introduced into the hyd. resevoir. I kinda think although the two don't actually share the same fluid they aren't totally isolated from each other either. The hyd. weren't working at all when I got this and found that a couple of the links and pins from the throwout collar on the pto broke and ended up in the pump due to a broken screen on the intake tube. I need to find another pump and possibly the valve housing too.
Thanks,jim
Thanks

Yep, the transmission and hydraulics use the same reservoir- 18 gallons (I have Hy-Tran in there too). Don L , who posts here regularly, could probably help you out with parts. How close are you to Iowa?

Thanks,jim

I don't think there is another C-O-M case within a billion miles of here. What are the odds your cousin is a Sullivan or marrying one?

No relation to Sullivans. She's a S. Dakota native working/living in Iowa now. I don't need any parts specific to C-O-M. You wouldn't know if the hyd. pump and valve housing from a 900B would swap to the 830? There's been one sittin' in the weeds right next to me for the 9yrs. I've been here.

Sorry, can't help with the hyd pump question. Try another post- somebody will know. Good luck in your quest for parts and answers (as opposed to the parts of answers I give). Have fun

SHeiserman, I have a 530 CK that developed a leak in the Clutch Control.. Fixed the Problem... but because the Trans Hydo Fluid I am using is Clear its hard to see the level on the Dipstick... Result: over filled the sucker... I would like to change to something with a "Color" ...

Any suggestions?

Hy-Tran Ultra (from the CaseIH dealer) is red. There are so many different choices for oil, I don't know which one is best, but Hy-Tran is what the dealer sells for C-O-M.

I'm not a guru of any sort, but my owner's manual doesn't say anything about flushing it. All it says for service is to drain and re-fill torque converter housing and breather every 240 hours. As far as oil goes all I've ever used is HY-TRAN ULTRA or Champion 4000 universal. Sorry it doesn't answer the question, but it's all I have. Good luck
