I'll be operating my recently purchased and unrestored 1945 VAC in temperatures that are commonly in the 90s. It currently shows 12 to 14 psi with the old oil (weight unknown). It seems to me that a 40 weight oil would be a good choice for the summer. Comments?

Every one has got in here but me, so...I second Tom. 15/40 is the best oil I have ever used. Used it in the cars at 20 below to turbo charged diesels at 110. Second his suggestion to flush it once. Non-detergent oil might be OK in old engines, but is a disaster in modern high powered engines. Actually, the tractor would probably run great on any thing you dump into it, so don'r worry too much.

Mobil Delvac 1300 15W40. Use it year round. Since you don't know what is in the tractor. Change filter and oil, run about 10 hours, change oil and filter again. This will get rid of any sludge build up.

First let me commend you on buying one of the best smaller tractors ever made.VAC Case is a fine tractor and easy to work on.Parts are also readily available. I don't particularly care for
multi viscosity in older tractors but 15-40 might
be alright.I use 30W detergent in mine which uses no oil but 40 won't hurt except it willbe hard to turn over in cold weather. But I would use a detergent oil. Thats the purpose of the filter.
Your oil pressure seems to be alright. I'm no expert but thats my 2 cent worth. Good luck with your VAC.

I use 30 wt. non detergent oil in my VAI.... Be careful putting detergent oil in a motor that never had it in there before....could open up a couple of leaks it didn't have before....

We run 15w40 in trucks and tractors here in kansas. Not so cold as John S. in winter, and a lot warmer in summer, and not one sign of trouble in the ten years we've done this. It also beats having two different weight oils sitting around, and trying to beat the cold weather with oil changes.

With all due respect to Mike, research shows that engine wear is greatest on engine startup. SAE 40 is fine for a warm engine but on a cool day at startup it is slower to make the rounds than a multigrade. 15W-40 would be my choice. Just another suggestion to confuse you.

About 10 years ago Chevron carried out a study on a fleet of 500 trucks operated by Alpha Beta.

A straight SAE 40 oil always gave a lower oil temperature than a 15W-40.

oil pressure is good. if #40 oil is what you use in your climate, that'll be fine too.

enjoy
