Just took the brakes apart on the 930.there are two thick cast iron disks, with radial grooves in them riding on either side of a stationary plate. It doesn't seem that the disks have nor have ever had any type of Raybestos, ect, no rivit marks, nothing. The disks are well over 1/2 inch thick. every thing was rusty and full of dirt, but i got the mechanism working, moving out and such.

Do I need new disks, or are they as they should be? I have adjusted them and they work about as good as throwing a leg over the side and dragging my foot. Where could I get these disks, and what will they run?

You'll have to excuse my ignorance as the only Case stuff I have is a working 36-58 threshing machine.

I've read all the follow ups, trust me go with the 5/8 inch balls and clean everything up.

My dad and I found if you replace the balls in the brakes with a 5/8 inch ball they are vertuially trouble free.

It takes 6 to do both sides. I got mine from Worthington Tractor - about $15 each. Made in Taiwan. Haven't got them on yet, but they at least seem to be a good fit on the splines. If I recall, Case wants about $28-30@ for theirs. I did take the time to chuck the actuator plates in the lathe and took a light facing cut to get rid of the glaze and rust.

Those pads are bonded, so you have to throw them away and get new ones. Your case/ihc dealer should carry them. Our dealer carries an aftermarket line that's cheaper than the originals. While you have them apart, check the actuator plate for rust, etc. in the holes that the iron balls are located. And make sure that the balls are indeed round. We've replaced some that were worn badly, they won't move the plates out enough to give good braking.

I have not worked on a 930, but the ones on my 500 Diesel and the late LAs had friction material bonded to the discs. When everything is cleaned up, they work OK. If you haven't already, it might be a good idea to check all the linkage and mechanism to see if everything is free. Binding or friction in that linkage can prevent good braking. Since it is all mechanical, everywhere there is friction, you lose that much force to the mechanism that actually does the braking.
