I have a tired 1949 VAC which forces oil out the breather (blow-by ?). I was thinking of an inexpense rejuvenation by having a valve grind & rings. My question is...does this wear out other parts like rod and main bearings faster..and am I wasting my time by even touching it? Also while I have your attention I would like to shorten the steering shaft for more comfort. Anyone got any suggestions?

On my dads VAC, the rear main bearing was the first thing to show wear. We have replaced the seal twice. My guess is that your main bearings are also badly worn. The replacement of the rings will create more stress on these bearings. Have you tried adjusting the valves?

How is your oil pressure? If its OK you don't have to worry about the lower end. If you can get your hands on a cylinder pressure tester you can determine if its one or all cylinders blowing back by the differences in pressure. As far as new rings are concerned, make sure the sleeves look good and then hone them to seat the new rings better. Of course its wise to check for wear with those expensive gauges if you can borrow them.
