Hi all,
I am looking to buy a 1971 DB990 with Case loader. I don"t know a whole lot about these machines and have been able to find out only a little. It"s a diesel. Who made the engine? It runs great, but the 3 point is a little reluctant. In good shape, what"s it worth in the Midwest? What problem area"s should I look for?
Thanks.

Thanks for the info. I have started the tractor, moved it, but not driven it around. The clutch all the way down stops the hydraulic pump? Not sure I like that very much. Why on earth would they do that? I realize you get used to partially deprssing the pedal, but that"s just odd. The loader is a Case 60, a little loose, but not bad. The shift boots are worn to the piont of letting water into the trans, I assume that isn"t helping the 3 point. Where is the oil level for the trans checked? Is there a stick or a plug? He wants 5K for the machine. Like I said, it fires almost instantly. Sounds great.I don"t know if I"d go 5K on a machine I know so little about, and can"t seem to find much info on, but I am intrigued.

The two stage clutch is just the way most machines were built back then. Since the pump was toward the rear. I think newer tractors have the pump on the engine so if it's running, you have hydraulics. Probably takes a bit of getting used to. Shift boots can be found and that's a common problem. If you buy it, change the shift boots and the hydraulic fluid, it might also solve the weak three point problem. Not sure where the dipstick is on this one. Mine has it right by the shifters and a plug to add oil to the system.

I'll jump in as I have an 880. David Browns were pretty good tractors, easy on fuel, seem to run forever with few engine problems. Hydraulics are finecky but kept clean will provide good service. I'd clean the hydraulic filter and see what happens. Price all depends on condition, but if it runs good, tires are good, loader works fine, I'd bet $4,000-5,000 would be a good price. Subtract for the weak 3 point.

The diesel engine (no gas) is David Brown's own engine. It's 198 CID with 53 horsepower. Two stage clutch for live PTO. Pushing the clutch pedal part way down stops forward motion. Pushing it all the way down stops forward motion and the PTO. Make sure the drive clutch does not slip. A good thing is changing the clutch disk does not require splitting the tractor. One drawback is pushing the clutch pedal all the way down not only stops forward motion and the PTO, it also stops the hydraulic pump. The drive clutch was the only problem we had with it.
