Is it best when parting out an old tractor to dismantle the machine as much as possible or try and sell the machine to a salvage yard. From all the posts and websites visited seems one would be better off dismantling and selling pieces. Anyone have thoughts or comments on the subject?

I got mad at a fella who was gonna part out an MM R I was looking at. Was nice tractor, new tires, ran well. He sold parts, made more money on them, than tractor. I agree, it's a shame to ruin good iron. On the other hand, if the gear case or engines have big holes in sides and most parts are missing or such, go for it, it saves someone elses maybe. Problem with parting is.....good parts or wanted parts go fast, you have to sit on the not so wanted parts, like gear cases, trans gears, rear-ends, all heavy stuff. Hard to move w/out loader or something, and take up plenty of space in yards or barns. AND, if opened, rust starts and may ruin machined surfaces and make unusable. I need my garage space, and have some stuff in yard now. All behind a big fence, but I see it, and it bothers me it's there, not being more usefull to someone!

well, its a real shame that people are dismantling tractors for parts value.

yes, its true that if you break it down into assemblies or even individual parts you can get twice the price of the tractor or more.

the really sad thing is those green tractor parts fetch a premium.

maybe you could get some JD paint and give 'em a quick spray. you might fool some people. lol.

Painting the parts green would surely increase the value and the green beans probably would not notice until they installed the parts. I really hate to part the old tractor out, but the money would go toward the restoration of my 52 VAC, worthwhile cause and potental to help some case folks in need of hard to find parts. Still debating the whole issue though.
