580B question

Got my 1973 580B tractor/loader/backhoe split right now for an engine rebuild. Engine froze over the winter and split the block right down the center. Finally got off my tail to get it running.

Anyway, in the process of pulling the engine away from the torque tube, there was about 8 quarts or so of hydraulic fluid that was in around the torque converter in the torque tube. Stupid question - is this normal, or do I have a big-time hydraulic leak somewhere. Also noticed that fluid had some water contamination, so I gotta check this out some more regardless. Perhaps there's a easy explanation for this from some of ya'll who have been through a Case more than I have, so I'm all ears.

Thanks!
Kevin

Not familiar with the 580B but my 530CK has case-o-matic and the torque tube does contain hydraulic fluid. TCH or equivalent.

Yes, it does have gaskets for the starter and the bellhousing. I also did some digging in the archives here and it sure looks like it is supposed to have a "wet" bellhousing. Now my water problem is another story...

Thanks!

Kevin

I've never replaced the water pump on the old 188, but I saw it done once, and as I recall, it was a sonofabitch... I think it was held on with studs, and the studs had to be removed before the pump could be taken off... but I'm sure there are folks on the case board who could give you lots more info.

Jim,
I actually have a little bit of water contamination in that fluid that was in the bellhousing. And I have changed a water pump on the machine before.....let's just say that it sucks. Had to pull the radiator to get the fan off the end of the water pump, and had to pull some hydraulics loose to get the radiator out. Not my idea of fun.

Right now the tractor is split and the engine is in pieces in the garage due to the block being split right down the middle. Luckily, I was able to find a decent recon block. Should be starting to reassemble later this week.

Thanks for the help.

Kevin

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe a 580B has a wet bellhousing. I've rarely worked on a 580 older than a C, but I replaced the started on a 580CK forklift years ago, and the starter had a gasket, so it had a wet bellhousing. When you removed the engine, was there a gasket or sealant between the engine and the bellhousing? If so, there's probably supposed to be oil in there.

Yes,530-580-580B series were wet behind flywheel. 580C and later used different{much better] power shuttle, similar to auto converter and sealed around input shaft.

Hope someone answers your question, because my brothers 580ck seems to have the same problem, he is wondering if the tractor has to be split to repair the problem.
