The home town where I grew up has an annual Museum Day each year, Even though I no longer live there, I enjoy taking the hour drive down for the event.

The feature of the day is the parade of antique farm machinery... Each year the local volunteers have a lineup of tractors ready to roll, at parade time if you have the basic skills and inkling to take one for a spin, you head over to the lineup and pick out a ride of choice....

I was down 2 years ago and got to take a ride on a W6 International/Farmall.

This year I was assigned a VA Case for my first ride. (Followed that lap around the grounds with a spin on a 1927 unstyled JD D)

Usually they have the tractors running so you don't have to deal with the quirks on how to start each tractor..

The VA was sitting there shut off. As I waited, I noticed some of the other tractors getting lined up to roll, so figured, I'll give this a whirl.

Flipped on what looked like ignition switch, made sure I was in neutral, and punched the starter...

She fired up in about 3 cranks, and settled down into a smooth idle. WOW... Obviously someone has spent some time working on this tractor, ran smoother than the 2N Ford I use on my acreage.

Nice view from the raised platform, and a real nice unit to take for a drive.

I remember growing up having the occasion to drive our neighbours D case with the hand clutch.

Wish I coulda had my digital camera with me to take some pics, cause in addition to the VA, there were several other Case units on parade.

D, LA, SC? I think.

Best part of the day is seeing the look in the seniors who remember either the owner who donated the tractor to the museum, or actually driving a similar model when they were younger ...

* For the record, our farm was very GREEN when I grew up on it in the 70's, so my experiences with other colours came through working for neighbours, or recently, purchasing a tractor for my own little 17 acre piece of land.

my VAC was the one we used as a wagon puller on our farm. it was always fun to drive, and i loved the sound it had. i loved taking my tractor to shows and sharing the stories w/ all the people that walked up to it. either they had one or knew someone who did. a perrenial favourite.

whaddaya say? have we converted you? this board could always use a few more "Desciples of the Eagle".

hope you had fun!

You never know... About converting ...

I'm very happy with the 1942 2N Ford I currently use around my acreage, and after growing up on a very monochromatic GREEN Acres type farm, I'm thinking I've already made that great leap in recognising that something other than a Deere is actually a useful tractor to have around...

Some day would like to get a smaller utility loader tractor, probably in the size of a 530 or 630 case would work, if the right tractor came along ...

What model's would you suggest for light to medium duty loader work.

I'm thinking that at some point people will quit making square bales around here, and I'll need something sturdy enough to deal with 1000 lb round ones.

I'd also want live pto and 3pt hitch so that I could re-use the implements from my N.

well, im not an expert on the big Case tractors my knowledge is limited to mine. Father has a JD 1020 that he uses from time to time w/ a #47 loader and it does him pretty good. i dont think its strong enuff for 1000lb bales though.

hes the GREEN freak in the family. he restored every piece of equipment on or farm and painted it green and yellow, JD or not.

maybe you guys are related or something. lol.

Sounds like great fun, Lyle. I'm glad there's still people who dare to do things like that without fear of liability. I'm that way myself. But then I haven't been burned yet.
