Well, I don't know what the correct procedure is, but I can tell you how I go about it. It's easier if you have 2 people. I pull the spark plugs out so that the engine can be turned by hand easier and so you can tell which cylinder is on the compression stroke. I adjust the valves in the same order as the firing order. You want to adjust each set of valves when that piston is on the compression stroke and all the way up. You can check to make sure it is the compression stoke by putting your finger over the spark plug hole as the piston comes up. When the piston is up, of course the valves should be closed and you should be able to shake both rocker arms if the valves are close to the correct adjustment. It is better to leave the adjustment a little wide than to get them too tight.
