Les, I THINK original pistons in a '44 were cast. Aluminum ones weren't available until sometime in the '50's, at least not for IH, which I grew up on during that era. I think Case was the same, will check w/BIL, he'll know, his dad bought a '46(?) new & they rebuilt it several times during its life. I don't think that those are the original pistons, probably been rebuilt at least once during its lifetime. I'm pretty sure the ones we have are cast. Gonna be gone until after the 4th, so will check when I get back. (Another $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

have you ever bought a GM "TARGETMASTER" engine?

what they do is take an engine casting returned on warranty (lets say it blew #4 piston) remachine that single cylinder .010"-.030" over depending on how bad it was, install an oversized piston, rebuild the rest of the engine w/ stock pieces and resell it to an unsuspecting customer looking for a deal on a rebuilt motor.

if the replacement pistons in this set youre looking at are aluminum, youre gettin a good set. its less weight for that poor old crank to throw around and may up your horsepower a smidge.

just ask yourself this:

do i want a good rebuild or a targetmaster?

Wash a few extra dishes for the misses, and maybe fix that broken screen door for her, then go buy the set. If you going to do the job, do it right the first time...

Yep, I've been told they don't make 'em any more. (BTW, what is he askin for 'em?) In case you decide not too, let us know, we MIGHT have a good one, depending on what bore & piston configuration ya have. Water in our part of the world is generally tough on the back side of 'em, so they usually have lotsa pitts in 'em. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

These are OEM pistons and sleeves. Some over $500 for the set of four. I believe the piston is aluminum and the sleeve is iron (see Sky Bartlett's post below). Would that make sense for a '44?

That's a lot of change but if you really like the SC go for it. Why not treat it to a whole new set instead of just one? Not too long ago I had to give $450. + for just a set of sleeves for a new generation Deere. I vote yes.
