I adjusted my timing on the weekend and the clamp bolt at the bottom of the distributor on my VA series (1949) vibrated out and has become missing in action. Rather than dragging the road with a magnet, does anyone know the thread size and length? Your input is appreciated.

After a tune-up and carburator overhaul the old VA does not seem to have as much power as before, even with the timing now set. Do the champion D16 versus the 3116 apply to the Case tractors as they do to the 'N' series? I noticed the warm engine is now harder to start although with full choke there is a lot of black smoke finding its way up the stack while cranking. Maybe I expect too much from a little 20 HP beast.

Hi Marty, sorry about my bolt verus screw mindset.
I guess you must have gotten another screw and nut in the clamp and have reset the timing. Black smoke is associated with late timing and also shows up as afterfire up the stack.

D16 plugs are listed as factory for VA 124 cid engines. I think the new cat nr is 516. I got so many DOA and short life D16's that I changed to Autolite 386 and have had service with them.

Good luck, Joe

The dist clamp bolt on my '59 311b & '53 VAC are both 1/4"-20 x 1/2"L. I have to lift the dist slightly, but not out of mesh, to get it in there. If yours vibrated all the way out, it was likely too short. Joe

Thanks Joe, The one that was in there looked like a #10x 1.5 ". Maybe it was held in with bubble gum by the previous owner! I'll try your size now.

Marty, What I described is the holddown clamp bolt. I think you may want the slot head clamp screw. It is indeed a #10-32 x 1 3/8"L machine screw with a square nut. There are no theads in the clamp, your nut must have fallen off. You might be able to use 1-1/2" but it might contact the block. Joe
