I have a guy trying to sell me an SC with foot clutch. Excellent metal except fenders,Real good tires all around. Runs real nice.
BUT.... He says it uses oil, and says he has a " Wood Block on the Clutch because it sits so long. I do not understand why the wood block? And how expensive could it be to fix a oil consumption problem.
He wants 1500.00 Is it worth it.

The SC's with the foot clutches may be worth more because there were fewer of them built, but the hand clutches work better. The clutch plates on the tractors with the foot clutches stick to the flywheel. He put the block in there I assume to keep the pressure off clutch plate so it won't stick. You shouldn't leave the hand clutch tractors parked for long periods of time with the clutch engaged either.

Bought a '54 SC (parked along side the road) in the summer of 2001. It had a bad engine, sheet metal & fenders really good, great tires all around. Gave the guy $300 for it. Put over $900 worth of parts into the engine, which includes getting the crank welded up, another $125 just for the rubber seat bushings. Did all work, except machine work on the head (which took 4 new exhaust valves @ $27 ea) ourselves. (Thank heavens Don L had a set of NOS bearings for it, I think they are different than the older SC's.) 11" clutch, don't have a clue where you will find one if its bad, mine is good, so I didn't worry about it. Great little tractor, purrs like a kitten now. Only 1,135 made w/foot clutches I've read, so its kinda rare. Hope this info helps w/your decision. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

Motor parts won't be cheap, remember that one being late will have a 3 5/8 bore and you will pay dearly for good fenders IF you can find them. The reason for the wood block is they had a problem with the clutch sticking on them.Usually not badly just enough to be annoying. There was a real nice one on the photo ads a while back but it was a little more money.

As a short guy, I think I can add to this discussion with some expertise. The wood block was attached to the clutch pedal so he could reach it with his foot (hence the "sits so long" comment)
