while researching my 1949 SO/EX I discovered that the other SO tractors had a magneto but mine has a distributor. Was this an option in 1949 I con't find it listed. A second question I had is do all Case tractors had such a strange shift pattern for their transmissions. I was expecting the standard "H" pattern but mine has more of an inline pattern with like this 4 - 3 R - 2 - 1

Making you shift sideways into gear. Seems strange.

I have a 1946 SC with a Delco distributor. When I stop and look at other old Case tractors many of them have a distributor instead of the mag. When I was a kid my dad had a 1942 SC with a mag and the solid hub rear wheels (not spoke - early SC). I figure that upgrade kits for these tractors were popular since mags fell out of "style" in the late 50s on most engines.

Bill; CASE used mags exclusivly on their tractors thru the mid 50's, only offering distributors as well as mags in about '54 or '55. CASE supplied Cessna aircraft with their mags.. The shift pattern may seem strange to you because the transmission shafts run crossways to the tranny case as compared to the shafts running in line with the case. Deere 2 cylender tractors had a similar arrangement.

I'm sorry I can't answer your question about the disturber other than to say SC's came with mags only in 49.
The shift pattern places second and reverse straight across from each other for connivance since second is the common plowing gear. Makes it easy to shift between forward and reverse.

Thanks Randy. This makes sense to me. Thinking about the distributor issue thought maybe someone may have converted it at some time.

We've got a couple of DC's & a couple of SC's that we've had to convert to distributors because we couldn't find parts for the Case Mags in our part of the world & we'd robbed all the spare parts from the bad ones to keep the better ones running. (Caps are a real problem to find here.) The right-angled Delco's that were originally an after-market option for IH stuff & are found on lots of AC's bolt up just fine. You can also use the horizontal Delcos & IH's too, but they are a tight fit. (We think the right-angle ones work better, cause they are easier to get at.) Parts are readily available from NAPA and our C-IH dealer. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

Thanks for the info. The distributor is a AC Delco right angle. That helps a lot. Thanks again.
