My son and I were having a discussion about Case serial numbers. I told him how the date thing worked with the 5 and 6 digit serial numbers, and he asked if they were consecutively serial numbered within each year. I didn't have an answer for him, does anyone have an answer?

Dan,

Also realize that numbers were issued sequentially, but not necessarily within the various model groups.

i.e. - serial #4912069 might be an "SC" model, but serial #4912070 might have been an "S".

umm... it can get tricky to explain in a simplified form. the answer is yes and no depending on the year of manufacture.

you may want to consult the "Illustrated Case Buyer's Guide" by Peter Letourneau. in the back of the book it explains the serial # pattern for case tractors from the first steam engine in 1912 (tractor#100) to 1955.

hope this helps!
