I started taking the sheet metal off my Case V (not VA) today and there are three round holes in the dash tin. The center hole (for an ammeter) is not used on models with a magneto ignition and no battery/generator. That middle round hole is blanked off with a removeable factory plate. This plate covers the center round hole and also covers a rectangular hole (about 1" x 2") that is below the center round hole. Anyone out there know what this rectangular hole might be for?

You guys are quite humorus. I'm glad these relics don't have all the electronic rifraf on them. I work at a Chevrolet dealer and all of the electronics that are being used I believe are starting to go over the engineers heads. I looked at my VC and the rectangular hole is for the starter push button switch. There should also be a round hole for the ignition switch. I am curious though. Some of the V series have the distributor on the side of the engine. My VC has the dist in the head. (what is correct?)

Might you be confusing the VA with the V series? The V series had a Continental 4-cylinder flathead engine which (if using a distributor ignition) had the distributor coming out the top center of the cylinder heqad. The VA's which came out next ih about '42 or so (overhead valves) had the cistributor out the side of the block on an angle I think.

Come on guys you should know that slot is for the check engine light and when it didn't have electric start it had a air bag warning light there.

well, if your tractor has no generator (and no use for a battery) and manual start one might assume that the odd hole is for a start switch but if it was possible to see a picture of the tractor (not just because i envy it) to see if i can figure it out.

does it not have a starter? just curious.

p.s. oh yeah theres a VI for sale in CA you may want to check out. scroll down on the page or something its here somewhere.

Nope, no starter, at least not yet. Mag ignition as most of them were I think. I don't think any battery/distributor ignitions showed up factory on the V's. I am going to put a starter on it (same one as is on the MH 101 Juniors) and also a generator to keep the battery charged. I'll try the mag ignition but I have a distributor for the engine too so I can go that route if I want later. Just can't figure out what this rectangular hole is for, doesn't seem to make any sense. There is a photo of the V in the photo gallery. If you go in there and "search" my name (Mike Ballash) you'll see it.

No parts contacts yet ... but the engine is no problem with it being the old flathead Continental. As a matter of fact I have an extra one here from a MH swather from the mid 60's (factory 12V) that I might use (the 124 in there right now is frozen and broken out). The yellow was a lawn ornament thing I think although I have thought of painting it yellow instead of orange. People do that with cars so why not with tractors right?

New CAT yellow w/ the old Case decals looks real sweet. seen it on a tractor out in Barrie, Ont. fell in love w/ it.

could always paint it Military Green (REEEEALY dark). looks good too!

All good ideas .... I've also considered grey or even two-tone grey (dark and medium), give it a bit of a Ford look. If anyone asked I'd tell them it was the military version and of course they'd say "Oh Yeah, I remember those". Anyways, that's a ways off, just tore off all the tin and tank, floorboards, etc. and will now try to get the engine unstuck. Lots of time to figure out a color. Maybe even JD Green, I've given that some thought too. All my other stuff is the right color, why not something different?

yeah.. if i let my dad have his way w/ my VAC it'd be painted green and yellow too by now. he paints EVERYTHING that colour scheme. JD or not.

you'd make a fan out of him if you did.

mind you case implements of that era were a colour similar to JD green. you could get away with saying it was an experimental model or something that happened to get painted that colour then repainted flambeau red when sold by the dealer. you found the original colour when you stripped it down!

sounds believeable to me.
