Pulled my '52 SC steering column to find that it was galled just under that top bearing. I can see how grease gets around the top shaft/bore area but what about the lower part of the casting where the shaft goes through the close bore? Does the gear oil lube the worm and shaft? BTW, does that top bearing act as a seal too when it is tightened up? Besides the little rust that had my steering bound, the rest of the shaft and worm gear were spotless grey metal, just like out of the factory! Thanks..

Hi Crispin,

This is what my replacement steering column looked like after I cleaned the caked on oil and grease off of it. I never was able to pull the steering shaft from the column- as I was unable to get the woodruff key to come out. When it started to deform, I knocked the burr off and put the worm gear back on.

A little WD-40 down the breather hole on the column dissolved the old grease and freed up the movement.

I haven't taken my old column out- as the flange won't clear the gas tank. Next time the hood comes off though, I'm gonna have a transplant and get the old girl back to an original type steering wheel!

Mike, I think you answered my question. A shot of oil in the vent will get to the lower bore. But, is that what is intended. How does the worm&rack get oil?
