I just bought a plow hitch for my VAC, and the hydraulic pump that runs off of the belt pulley doesn't work. Did I put in the wrong oil? I tried to bleed it the way the manual says, but it doesn't work. Thanks

Are you sure that the pump hasn't been shut off at the cam? There's a lockout bolt that needs to be out 11/8"-1/1/4" for the pump to activate. My relief valves were stuck you might try cleaning those.

Yeah...good point about the pump lockout! I haven't used that feature for so long I forgot about it... a guy could go nuts if he didn't know it was there! :-)

I don't have a manual, but here is how my dad and I have maintained his for the last 34 years. He has always used automatic transmission fluid in it. To bleed it, with the tractor running we open the brass drain cock and hold the control lever in the up position until it starts to raise and good bit of oil starts to gush out. Make sure you haven't sheared the cotter pin off that goes through the pump shaft where the control rod attaches. You may be moving the control rod and it is not turning the shaft on the pump.

Thanks. I'll give it another try this weekend. Maybe it was the 10w-30 I put in it.

I use 5w-30 in my pumps, better below zero, as ATF eats the brake wheel cylinder cups I use for seals in the cylinders. If you can't get the pump bled using the bleeder valve then, with the lever in the lift position, loosen the spring seat caps (looks like 2 bolts) on the bottom of the pump just enough to let the air and some oil pump out...should do it. :-)
