I have a DC4 and a fellow collector has a D, we were trying to figure out the 2 slots, front and back on the sides of the hoods, were they for some type of canvas sidecover or ? Any info would help. Thanks.

I saw a photo of a Case DC with what was described as corn picker side curtains in a recent issue of Old Abes News.

Hi Gentlemen, I know of a Case C with side curtains. It is always at a show that I attend in WI. I'm quit sure they are original. Next show I will take a picture of it to share with each and everyone. I also think side curtains are a little intreging.

For side curtains. Metal engine covers.

Hi Dan,

I've wondered about those slots, too.

The only thing I can figure is that they were for the chrome hood strips on the pre-war models, and the slots were just left when the trim was deleted.

HOWEVER, the LA has those slots too- but I believe that they are BELOW the rib of the hood and I (think) I've seen LA pictures where you could see both the strip and the slots simultaneously.

Anyway- that's my theory. Maybe somebody out there has the answer.

The Case skid engines or power units had side curtains. They have the same sheet metal as the tractors, just don't have the tractor. Most were used as a stationary belt drive power unit. I would think if you could find an old power unit and the curtains were still on it, they would fit onto the tractor without and modifications.

Hey Mikey,

I remember this same confab at Glen Roase between you, I and the DC 3 owner beside me. The LA parked on my right, My C, and the DC on my left all had the slots. I have also noted my L is still in its pure, unslotted state.

I've always wondered if the slots might be for side curtains but I have yet to ever see any Case with curtains.

While I am an admitted side curtain fanatic, I will now confess publicly that I have indeed fantasized many times about how nice a C or L would look with the curtains. I have yet to actually start designing any to retrofit to mine. If I should go that far, I promise to seek professional psychiatric help.

I suppose I'll just have to go on and obtain a couple of Mc Deerings to satisfy these sheetmetal desires of mine and let my old Cases remain chaste.

If you can come across a copy of CH Wendel's 150 Years of JI Case, there is a picture of an "L" with side curtains on page 272. I also have original copies of dealer's parts manulas, and they show side curtains available for special order.

Hey Paul,

If you want to see a picture of a Case or three with side curtains- all you have to do is open up your handy-dandy copy of "Full Steam Ahead":

pages 156 &161 have pictures of an "L" with side curtains.

page 248 shows a military "LAI" with side curtains.

I've never seen 'em on a "C" or a "D" though. Even that armored military model D didn't have any.

I like the way side curtains look on old tractors, too... but I could never determine what possible function they could serve. Just another layer of stuff to remove to service the tractor, IMHO.

If you want to- it shouldn't be too hard to make a set of curtains. With the slots already in the hood- you wouldn't have to modify the tractor in any way- and they'd be easily removable.

The slots on the LA are for the metal side curtins. I have an original set on one of my LAs. Next time I am at the farm I will take some photos.

Hi Mike,On my 1945 DC4 I have the chrome strips and the slots are just below the chrome and are visible, on my buddy's D there are no factory holes to facilitate chrome but the slots are still there in the same location.
