What type of fluid is supposed to be used in the lifting bail pump on a 1949 SC? I put hydraulic fluid in the reservoir, is that OK?

Hi Myron,

According to my CASE Hydraulic Control Unit Operator's Instruction Manual for S, D and LA Series Tractors (2nd edition):

OIL SPECIFICATIONS

"A good quality straight mineral engine oil made by a reputable manufacturer should be used in the hydraulic system.

When the unit is operated at low temperatures (below 30 degrees F.), an SAE 10 or 10W oil should be used. This grade of oil is suitable for temperatures up to 80 degrees F.

When operating in high temperatures (above 80 degrees F.), an SAE 30 oil should be used."

OIL CAPACITY

"The capacity of the Models "S" and "D" series tractor hydraulic system, complete with mounted cylinder and hose lines, is approximately 9-1/2 quarts. When a portable cylinder is used in addition, the total capacity is 11 quarts."

I want to say that my Dad put Lubrigard in both the transmission case AND the hydraulic system... but I couldn't swear to that.

Guess I'll find out the day that I drain the system.

Let me know if you want me look up anything else.
