Trying to get my latest DC running. I need a starter for it though. The starter that is on it was supposedly rewound for 12 volt but it don't work. Where can I find another starter? Is there another starter that will work other than the type that they came with? It could be 6 volt for all I care. I just don't want to try and start this thing by pulling it. Thanks!

The 39 and 40 take a different starter than the later models. I have DC starters in all my SC's. The ring gear has a different # of teeth on the early DC. I'm sure it would be the same as the late CC with starter. If you have a 41 or newer DC a starter should be easy to find. About the only trouble I have with them is the coil spring on the starter drive. I have three DC's that run every day of the year to do chores and they start very well at -30 degrees on 12 volt. Don L has a direct drive bendix for these starters to eliminate the spring drive. I have had very good luck with them. I would suggest getting your starter looked at. I'll bet you can fix it cheaper than you can replace it. If your DC hasn't run in a while I would suggest belting it up to another tractor to get it running. Make sure you have oil pressure, spark, fuel, compression, and proper timing, and it has to run. Good Luck

I tried to start a 39 DC with the starter from a 49 SC and it would not engage the ring gear right. I would be sure to get a DC starter. You might look into having it rebuilt.

awhitaker- I looked at my v*a*l*u*-*b*i*l*t catalog the other day for somebody from this board- and I saw that they list a "D" Series starter for years 41-55. (They also list a different model # for a 1940 DC- but I can't imagine why they would be different.)

From my CASE "D" series parts manual: Part #05566AB "Starting motor. Purchased from the Electric Auto-Lite Co., Toledo, Ohio- their No. MAB4105." It shows that this starter works for "D", "DC", "DO" and "DV" tractors. (The MAB4104# matches the v*a*l*u*-*b*i*l*t catalog# for the "D" starter.)

CASEPOWER (Jonathan Winans) is building a CC pulling tractor. Last week he told me that you could use an "S" series starter on a CC or DC. I believe the S starters are smaller in size, but he says they will work. However, there's only about 5 bucks difference in cost between the two units.

From my "S" series parts manual: The starter is Part #05973AB "Motor- starting (Auto-Lite No. MZ-4095)" (This also matches the catalog # that V-B lists for sale.)

You don't need to have these starters re-wound to operate on 12 volts. They are plenty heavy-duty and will last a long time unless you are constantly cranking them. Some people on the board have said they have gotten wear on the flywheel from the Bendix engaging harder on 12V- but I've been starting my SC on 12 volts for years with no problems at all.

Hope this helps, -Schotte
