VAC-14 rebuild

I am currently rebuilding a VAC-14 engine. The oil has coolent in it and the rocker arms are rusty. I am not to familiar with sleeved engines. I am looking for where the coolent could have gotten in the oil. I guess my choises are bad or "blown" head gasket, cracked block, or bad sleeve. I have the head off and it is on it's way to my local NAPA for re-build. I also want to install new rings while I have it apart. By the way, the head gasket looked o.k. but I'm not sure what to look for in that area. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Have NAPA magnaflux the head to check for cracks. Before you put the head back on and with the oil pan removed, fill the engine block up with coolant and let it set for a few days to see if anything drips out the bottom from around the sleeves. If you are worried that the head gasket may not seal properly, buy some of the copper spray at the auto parts store to coat it with before you put it on.

To pmtoolbox and Mike from Canada, thanks. Those are two areas I would not have known to look at. When I got the head to NAPA, the machine shop guy spotted 5 of the 8 valve springs installed upside down. Don't know if that would impede performance or not but it is a good indication that the head has been worked on before. Probably a fair assumtion considering that the tractor is 50 years old! Anyway, he will rebuild the head and order new gaskets. In the mean time, I will check those areas and see what they look like. I will also re-ring it. I have to work some overtime this week, but when I get back on it I'll keep you posted.

hope the rebuild goes well, but I think you should consider replaceing the O rings on the sleaves. these can give you a coolant leak just as a cracked block.do a good inspection and if nothing else is found this could be the source

check the front of the head for a lead plug that case called a fuse. its located at the front end of the rocker shaft dividing the cooling jcket from the oil in the head. if the coolant overheated enough it would melt the plug causing a catastophic event that boggles the mind. you may want to make sure this plug is entact before you fill your tractor w/ antifreeze & oil.

good luck!
