Could anyone out there give me some guidance on
painting a case "311-b" I have the front rims, sheet metal sand blasted & primed, but have not started on the basic parts of tractor, engine, transmission,
& rear end, & rear wheels. The paint was acquired at case-intnt'l. dealer, two quarts of desert sunset & two quarts of power red. Will this be enough paint? I have never spray painted before & bought spray gun,air filter & regulator, have a 3 hp compressor & now
need to read & acquire advice. Special primer for
engine, trans., rear end? How much & kind of sheet
metal preperation,& castings areas,& whatever else?? Any advice would be appreciated!! Thank You in Advance, Charles D. Zook

mr zook...beleive it or not i just fninhed painting an sc case by hand i mean by hand... i took it apart washed each item with mean green degreaser washed off, primed it with either the red or gray primer and painted it with a brush! in smome places i used a foam rubber brush and in some cases a spray can . the local farm store had implement paint in quarts and in spray cans. it looks great i have shown this tractor at the county fair and thsy cant believe i did it by hand. I tumbled the small parts anything that will fit inside of a gallon plastic jug in a home made rock tumbler i put in a hand ful of dry wall screws and some degreaser and let it tumble for a day come out bright and clean sure beats a wire brush.

For the best job you've got a good start. For best results wash the tractor with degreaser(I like Castrol Super Purple)and hot water washer.Just never spray it on a car,ect paint surface it will take of any grease a hot water washer will leave.Next I would sandblast the rest of the tractor, if not read lable on your primer(you should get it to from Case) to see if you need to sand old paint for it to stick.Wipe all surfaces before painting with Prepsol(availabe at auto stores)to remove any remaining oils(fisheyes in finish). As for the sheet metal I would prime first with Lacor primer(auto parts store)2-3 coats and wet sand with 120 paper and finish with 440 paper(may take 8-10 coats of primer) but that depends on how good a finish your looking for. Then prime with the enamel primer and your finish coat.Rember two light coats are better than one heavy coat with runs.Good Luck and let us know how it turns out,Dave
