I am the process of restoring a '48 VAC Case tractor. I am a rookie and learning as I go! I have the engine apart and I am in the process of cleaning the block. I have discovered cracks between the sleeves. My question is, should I worry about this? Will the engine leak anti-freeze if not welded? Any help would be appreciated.

I asked the same question about 5 months ago, got tons of opinions, I put JB weld on and then ground it off and had it professionally welded. Like one gentleman said, you have it apart why not do it right the first time, or!!! you can take it back apart and fix it right the second time. My crack was between 3 and 4 of a Case 930 diesel. Wet sleeves, It did not take me long to decide . JB weld like most say is great for gas tanks and other stuff. My comments may even be in the archives. Theres alot of very smart people out on this website and I really value there opinions. Good luck on whatever choice you make. I know I sleep better at night not worrying about the JB weld breaking its hold some day. Mike

my 49 VAC has a crack on the deck between cylinders 2 & 3. if your situation is like mine, you may be ok. the cooling system runs open (unpressurized) and the head gasket seals really well around the sleeves. however i cant visuallize your problem based on your description. if it was a crack on the outside of your block you could go the quick and dirty way and j.b. weld it. it does an excellent job but it looks obvious. if you want to keep the numbers on your tractor matching you may want to take the block to your local engine machine shop and get an opinion on it. plead poverty (like you cant get another block), and maybe they'll be able to repair it for you. it may be a bad idea to say your restoring it (because they'll mark up the price on you) so just tell them your fixing it.

good luck!

mike

Matching no's isn't a problem with the VAC. There's no way to match the engine and tractor no's anyway, so if you have another block, use it.

I have a vai that i pull in a 5 mph class , that is cracked down the center of the block. Pulled it for two years , no problems yet. You need a good block if you are going to restore it right.

Small cracks - Big cracks ? Any crack is not good. If it is the early block VT120,they are around, but if it is a VT328 Block , it will take a bit to find. Once the sleeve is out, you may see how far in the webing is has cracked and judge it with a friend.
