Can the main bearings be adjusted through the pan side ports or does the pan have to come off?

You can try to pull the main caps through the side covers, but if it has a slight main knock to it it most likely has chunks of babbit broken out and you are in for more major repairs. Most of the DC's I've taken appart the shims were taken out long ago. Nothing to loose in trying. Good Luck.

My Dad when he run out of shims for his (mine now) 29L he filed the caps and if he filed to much he than put back in shims. when babbit broke up soidered it back. For 45 yrs he plowed 500 ac. a year for 16 yrs. with a three 14 for ten yrs and a four 14 for five years. He did the rest of his farming with it too(rodweeding and seeding[ten ft. JD 12" semi-deep furrow drill]and still has the original mains and rod bearings and crankshaft. . He for the first 30 yrs replaced the sleeves and pistons every two yrs. It has had at least 18 sets of sleeves pistons and rings. they in the thirty's cost $30 for the set. Oh yes it has the original carb.(kingston) and the same head.
