Well, after a lot of research, we decided to have the cracked block welded. The crack went all the way through the deck, and through the water jacket webbing. The machine shop will also re-cut the counterbores and finish-plane the deck surface. Thanks very much for all of you who responded to my posts.

Let's see...we started with a VAI that looked in pretty decent shape, with a very slight engine knock. Now we have:
welded and ground crankshaft, re-machined connecting rod (to repair spun bearing damage)
repaired engine block
new bearings / thrust washers
new gaskets, sleeve o-rings, and seals
new rings
refurbished clutch
new ????

I keep telling my wife that, while all of this stuff has a price, the finished, near-perfect Case tractor is priceless (like the Visa commercial)...but so far she isn't buying it...

Ah yes....the 'Iron Mistress' syndrome....happens when the fairer s-e-x (dashes needed to circumvent YTmags' built-in rejection of 'THAT' 3-letter word that starts with 's' and ends with 'x') perceives an intrusion into 'their' realm by such as: old tractors, vintage autos, guns, motorcycles, etc. My second ex, what's-her-face, got very big on this....still got my bikes, guns, cars and tractors.....life is good!

hey Brent!
havent heard from you in a while. good to see your wife is somewhat supportive of your hobby.
if she ever gets in your way about the time and money you spend on the tractor just say its keeping you off the streets and out of the bars. it could be worse. your tractor could be perceived as the other woman in your relationship with her.

good luck!

Brent;

If you happen to convince her, let the rest of us know what it was that you said so we can too. I have a VAI and a VAC, The VAC is probably gonna be about the same kind of project as you have going now. It's not cracked, but it needs new cyl. sleeves, bearings, rings, etc... But that's what I enjoy doing, so to me the time I spend IS priceless. (try that and see if it works)

The best way to take care of the wife uderstanding problem.
1) Move to the city!
2) Have friend, partner, tractor buddy with a farm.
3) All tractors bought go to the farm.
4)Never bring more than one tractor to city at any given time! My wife thinks they all look the same.
5) Back to the friend on the farm, his wife is going to raise cain, but he can blame that (#$*^)city fellow for getting all those (##!!@&^) tractors.Works for me!
