VAI crack in block

We are in the process of rebuilding our VAIs. One of the tractors has a crack in the engine block at the top (head surface), between #2 and 3 cylinders. It looks like it was leaking compression between the those two cylinders. The crack is all the way through, and might extend all the way through the webbing in the water jacket.

What can we do? Is this a common thing for the VA series? Anyone have any ideas?

Brent, The taper plug crack repair lacing has been around for 60yr.Thank God before my time. I have used it for 25yrs on various repair with excellent results.Irontite was one of the first with the cast taperplug. The problem is you can't fix every crack you see or find. The other thing that gives lacing a bad rap is the guy doing it won't follow the recomended procedure or hasn't had the proper training. The new and improved lacing is by locknstitch their plugs have a special thread that is a spiral hook that actually pulls the crack together. They demo. at our engine rebuilder shows. They will lay two pieces of cut cast or steel side by side and drill and tap the joint and you can't pull them apart. If you by a repair kit you get a nice video of how to repair.Their plug is a straight plug and not tapered. They have stripped thead repair ,spark plug repair. They have a special clover leaf repair that will add strength to the casting. No I don't work for the company but I believe in new technology.I dont know where you live but if you call their 800 number they can refer you to a shop in your area.If you have any questions e-mail me, maybe I can help. Earl

It is not uncommon for these blocks to be cracked between the cylinders. It is easily repairable as long as it is not cracked through the lower packing in the block. All you need to do is what is called lacing. It involves using a special tapered tap and a cast iron tapered screw. Most machine shops can handle the job, but if you can't find one that can you can do it yourself with the proper tools. I don't know where you are located but I can also do the job. I live in south central Iowa and own a NAPA store. You can contact me through my e-mail if I can help you.

Jim ,

I use lacing plugs and have for many years,

but the deck between the cyl's is not a good use

for them . A bolt thru the water sys into the

pushrod wall and sealed , will pull the block

back together and help to prevent another crack.

Then grind out and weld the crack , plane the

deck , recut the pilot bore and the counterbore.

I fix the Z and J series continental engines that

way and have for years .

Lacing tend to push the crack in the deck wider

apart and does not give any support to the cyl

liner and with out support under the liner you

lose the crush on the head gasket making gasket

failure almost a sure thing.

Also see the webbing sink between the liners in

the 4020 JD engines causing gasket trouble, they

sink .003 to .004 , plane the deck about .007 and

problem goes away and they start better.
