You was asking about the serial numbers on the C series. There is a machined flat spot on the right side of the block, but not on the round housing part like a D series. The serial number on a C will not tell you the actual style of tractor. The tag on the toolbox may say CC-367689 but the block will say C-367689. So there are many tractors that are called Cs that could be CI or CO tractors. My CC is the same way, but lucky it had the toolbox tag. My pulling tractor has a C on the block, but I believe it was a CO because of the independent brakes that most all Cs just had a single hand brake. The burnt tractor on auction gives the serial number and you can tell the year and that it is a C series, but looks to be a CC-4. It has CC fenders, rear platform, and rear wheels. From what I can tell case had problems with the front casting on the CCs and a lot were sold with wide and narrow fronts and alot were changed to wide fronts after the castings broke. There were at least 3 front casting updates that I know of going from 50 pounds up to 150 pounds. The cultivators also mounts to the front. They started out mounting on the casting under the radiator and was moved up the the front chicken roost casting. The heads on the Cs with the straight plugs were bad for cracking and also lacked performance because the plugs were not angled towards the piston and was not inset like the D series.

Thanks, CASEPOWER.

You see those Case toolboxes with the serial number plates still attached to them on Ebay all the time. I really hate seeing that- since what you are telling me is once that model info is gone... there's no getting it back by reading the number on the block.

I suppose that you could still tell the difference between a CC and a CC-4 by ordering a build sheet for the tractor, though. (although you usually don't do that BEFORE you buy a tractor.)
