See my post. If you had a pluggd oil passage you would not have gone 5 miles without things getting very noisy. You replaced the rod bushings which could cause more piston slap and drag, the upper rings are not smooth yet and your new oil ring wants to stop all the oil. I believe in using upper lube for at least 250 hours. Remember your valve guides are tight too. Twenty-five pounds of oil pressure is the best for an SC. A spun bearing would make that a lot less by now. Another five minutes with oil in the upper cylinder will tell what you need to do. It's your call.

I wrote you first and then read the post.. While I think the coolant level was probably the problem, my experience sounded JUST like yours. I'm so tempted to try it. If it ran fine could I live without knowing what those cylinders look like? Thanks again

I answered you first and then read your post... Remember that I did drive the 4 miles without a problem. It was at home and half full of coolant when I had the problem. Mine sounded Just like yours though. I'm so tempted to run it because it could be like yours and never be a problem...

L.Lamp, Thanks.. I think I agree with "Fred" and CASEMAN on this, I was about half full of coolant and it really seems like this is the likely cause. What I'm not sure about now is what did the binding and how bad the damage might be, if any. I looked in my notes and saw a ring gap of .060"-.064". My bores ranged from 3.501" to 3.508". I'm not sure what dia. pistons are, but I would say that the pistons would bind first, not the rings. As tempted as I am to "run it", I think I'll pull the head and take a look. I'm thinking I could even bead hone the holes with each piston down all the way as the top of the bore is where the action is anyway...
We're buried in snow still so I'll probably wait a little longer. I have a sneeking feeling that I could run this thing now that it's filled properly and it would be fine but since I had three of those episodes, I'm scared to...

It all depends on how hot it got. If it was really hot steam would be coming out the top of the radiator big time. If you didn't let it get that hot I wouldn't take it apart. You know what you did. Take the plugs out and shine a light into the cylinder. You might get an ideal how bad or good things look. You will be able to see part of the cylinder wall when the piston is down.
