VAI governor questions

The governor on one of our VAIs was not acting exactly right - it didn't seem to adjust the carb setting correctly.

I have the engine disassembled to pull the crankshaft and give it a general overhaul.

Regarding the governor, there are no springs or anything in the governor, to act against the centrifugal weights on the camshaft gear. Is there supposed to be something in there, or the timing cover?

Do you have the flyball (3/4" balls -qty. 9) type or flyweight (2 cube-type weights) type of governor?

Either type has NO springs inside the timing cover case. The spring is external beneath the head on the right side of engine; hooks to the lever arm at the front and the throttle control rod at the rear.

It's got the two cube-type weights. From what you're saying, the force to return is provided by that spring on the throttle lever shaft. I was going to replace that anyway - it has definitely seen better days, and looks like it has been stretched/bent/whatever.

Thanks much!
