I need to know what relationship the two gears must be in to be timed correctly. I have 41 and JMA mags. One mag fires on three out of 4 turns! Help!!!

On my 1950 SC the fiber rotor gear has two teeth that are beveled on one side. They are hard to see until you know what to look for. The smaller metal drive gear has a dot below one tooth. The dotted tooth goes between the two beveled teeth. Might be worth taking at look.

Like John says. There should be marks on the gears. The mag will rotate 2 times for each turn of the distributor rotor. Remove the distributor cover and see which wire it points to.

It's been a while since I've had a mag apart but I seem to remember timing marks on the gears and it took some care getting them right. If you put the mag in a vise and hook up just one wire it will spark when it shouldn't because a charge is building up for another tower and it can't go so it jumps across to the one you have grounded. If you put 4 wires in, ground 3 and observe 1 it should act normal. This is what I have found. Hope this helps, John

Thanks for the comments. I could not find a timing mark on the rotor disc and that is my problem. I sure don't want to bend a rod or break a crankshaft because the mag is firing wrong!

The mark may have just been a painted tooth, but they were usually pretty durable. There may be 2 marks, one for each direction if the mag is reversable.
