Roger has a CASE tractor that he got from his Uncle, we have been told that the year is determined by the serial # plus or minus "4" of the last 2 digits.... which way do we go ?

Seven digit # 5599559 -4 = 51 6 digit 354545 35-3=32 and it also depends on the model if it's newer than a 52 model. helps if you know the model

Thanks for the info, we now know that we have a '51 VAC.... are you familiar with the hydraulic system on this particular tractor? Roger is looking for the fill line.... we were told that it is the square bolt on the torque tube... not sure where the torque tube is, is that below the streeing column ? The maunual that we have is not clear and for earlier models....

thanks ever so,

Since you have a 1951 VAC, you no doubt have the Eagle hitch. The torque tube is below the steeing column, in between the flywheel housing and the transmission. I believe that your tractor has a hydraulic filter on it also. This is located below the fill plug, and should be held in with 4 bolts. If you have problems with the lift being slow, this filter may be plugged. It can be removed and cleaned. What weight of oil do you use in the hydraulic system? The manual says that you are supposed to use 20W over 6o degrees; 10W between 32 and 60 degrees; and 5W below 32 degrees. Since I use mine very little in the summer, I use 10W in it year around.

Thanks for the info....the tractor fits the desc. perfectly and now Roger is sure, also thanks for the heads up on the filter...

The manual we have is an older one and it is the shop service version, too technical...is the manual that you are referencing, is it an owners manual or some other maint. version ?

I have a '52 VAC and I have the original Owner's Manual that came with the tractor when it was new. I recommend that you get one. They are very helpful.

I bought a Case manual from our now-defunct dealer back about 1986 or so. He said then that it had been in stock for about 15 years and is titled 'CASE - VA Series Tractor and Engine Service Manual'. It has a glossy cover (orange, black & white) with a reference number (Rac 258) on it. Down at the bottom it says 'J I Case - A Tenneco Company' with the Tenneco shield to the right of that. It may be a re-issue by Tenneco of the original Case manual since, in many of the pictures of the Eagle hitch, the tractor in the photos has the earlier transaxle casting with the Eagle rockshaft assembly mounted to the tractor with a fabricated bracket. I believe that would date the picture and manual around 1948 or 1949 since they used a prototype Eagle hitch in the photos. It is absolutely complete in it's coverage and shows all of the special tools and their part numbers that Case developed for overhauling the entire tractor including both the high and low-pressure hydraulic systems. As there is no copyright date anywhere, I'm considering trying to reprint this manual and making it available on a limited basis.

There is an operator's manual available on the Yesterday's Tractors website. Also, you may be able to get one from your CaseIH dealer.
