There is a VAH on e-bay that does not have the drop axles with the outer bull gears. I e-mailed the owner and kindly informed him as I would perfer others to do for me. He told me that his was a CORRECT VAH. You tell me. Am I just seeing things?? Did they make a VAH with a straight rear axle that I don't know about?? Here is the link. You tell me what you think.. If I am wrong I will e-mail him and let him know that I was wrong..

Just my two cents. I am restoring a VAH as we speak. The rear wheels that the parts book shows are 36" and the center section part numer should be VT-504. I agree that all VAH's that I have seen and the parts book shows have dropped rear axles and a dropped wide front axle. The one listed on Ebay apears to have the correct front axle and rear wheels by the picture. It will be interesting to see what ends up wiht this interesting conversation piece.

Hey guys,

I don't have a dog in this fight but would like to make some points about this VAH. A couple years ago I would argue that a VAC 14 wouldn't have a narrow front untill someone showed me one. Some dealers ordered a bunch of them in certain areas of the country. Just because case made them a certain way doesn't mean they couldn't be ordered different. Special order.

Now for the VAH. It is not a VAC with a different front end. Look at the rear hub. Have him send you the tire size. It's probably 36 or 38, Not 28. It is not a five point but rather a six point hub. I would guess that it probably has an eagle cast in it. They used a 36 and a 38 inch rim on some of the VAH's. We need to be real careful here. Lets help him find out what he realy has before we ruin a legitimate sale. I bet he has a true blue, genuine, real deal, VAH. does anyone know how to contact Erb or Brumbaue which ever it is that edits the case quarterly. He worked for case back in them days. Maybe he could save the day for us.

Thanks for listening guys.

So trying to keep a man from spending his hard earned money for a tractor that is not what is seems is ruining a sale. The front it VAH, The 6 spoke wheels are late VAH and will be 36 inch, the rear is VAC. Thats my story and I'm sticking to it. If it's a rare VA? you should be over on e-bay a bidding away. I work for my money and some one pointing out a problem is appresiated were I come from. You can take it as you wish. I got some ocean front property in West Virginia if your interested.

Wheatstraw,

David Erb can be reached thru www.oldabe.com

If I was a great computer wizzard I would email him but am terrible at connecting links. I have emailed him many times and he always answers. This might be a picture/puzzle he could use in Old Abe.

What a great answer. I never would have noticed the rear wheels if you hadn't pointed it out, Wheat straw. I don't think I've ever even seen 6-points on a VA series before.

On a related note- I had been corresponding with the seller for the auction linked below.

He had listed the serial number as ending with "SE" - and I was wondering if he'd gotten the number off of the plate or the flange... thinking it might have had an "power unit" engine transplant.

Long story short, number was listed wrong- and it was a true blue SC after all.

I looked today and I can not read the tag the first part it's va (X). I can see no traces of this tractor having been modified and it all looks to be stock but here in NJ I have seen some very intresting conversions factory and field. If I'm mis representing it I'm sorry but I'm going by what I know and have been told. I do appreciate all of you insight and I will modify my e bay listing (if I can).

Greg, I was in no way trying to start trouble. I have alot of friends on the net and just didn't want anyone to buy something there not sure of. The tractor to me is still worth what you are asking. I have a VAH rear but no front and would love to have it. It's just a little to far for me to travel. Unless you want to meet me in Northern Virginia?? If so I will bid.. I hope you are able to figure it out and if you will list the casting numbers on the rear I will be glad to help. Jonathan

Jonathan, I think this would be a fun "little" tractor to have to play with. Hope you can work something out with Greg.

Upon closer inspection, it looks like the long front spindles and taller rear tires (9-32 ?) were used to get higher clearance, possibly due to the post-war 'parts swapping' going on at the factory as mentioned in my previous post. It's quite possible that it IS a factory VAH, just not configured like we're used to seeing. If it is then it is REALLY rare! My opinion.

I've come across so many variations of the VA series that I was prompted to ask the owner of one of the former dealerships here about them. His reply was that 'after the war the factory (J.I. Case) was putting tractors together just about any way they could in order to fill incoming orders. As the production line began to get up to speed they began to standardize to a greater degree.' For example: I have 2 VACs with the beam-type adjustable wide front that only lack longer spindles and bullgears to be Hs; it's possible that the H you are seeing started out an H and then the order was shifted to a VAC on the line. Rather than re-document and re-tag the factory just fitted the shorter spindle front and the non-bullgear rear. Another example is the VAO: I've owned 3 of them and 2 were fitted with the flat floorbards and the third with the drop-down boards ala Ford 8/9n tractors. That VAO was also fitted with a hitch unlike any I've ever seen in that it had the Case lift links that went from the mid-mount lift to a Case add-on 3-point. I've seen other factory 3-point systems but this one was actuated, not by the hi-pressure system and cylinder, but by a RIGHT side mounted low-pressure cylinder with the engine mounted low-pressure pump and a factory control valve. Unfortunately, the guy that had it when I first saw it changed it by moving the cylinder to a spot under the seat thus eliminating the lift-links (you had to climb over them when getting on or off the tractor). He also chaged the fenders from the orchard style to the 'butterflies' shown. I did not get any pictures of it before the change. Check the link below and select the 'Tractors" album for pictures of this tractor and others. Click an image and the size increases, then you can click on 'original' for real detail if you need to.

to me, it looks like a VAC with a VAH front axle. now look at the ground, look at front tire then look at rear tire. looks like the tractor is siting on a slope (headed down hill)

CASEPOWER It looks like it has the drop boxes on the axel. If you project the center line of the rear wheels it would go under the differental? Just my prospective. I dont have much experance with CASE tractors. I have a model V-O 1941. I am looking at a CASE model VAH not to far from my place and the picture looks like it. This one has a cultivater on it and a flat belt pully drive less the pully. Just my two cents worth

Casepower, on all the pictures of the VAH's I've seen they show the drop axle. Not being an expert on much of anything it appears to me that this has the adjustable front axle and the same rims that come on a VAH but with "straight" axles. Just an observation.

That is what I am seeing. I just wouldn't want a fellow Case man to think he is getting something he is not. I may make people mad doing it, but the e-mail I recieved back pretty much said that I didn't know what I was talking about and I must be thinking of a VAS. It seems that the owner thinks the VAH don't have outer bull gears and only a VAS has them.

Acording to the publication "CASE GP TRACTORS" by Robert Pripps. Not all VAH were equipped with "Drop Boxes" Models with tire configurations like 28"s used the boxes to make up gear reduction.Tractors with 36" or 38" used straight axles. Keep in mind, NOT ALL MODELS! Depending on what job the tractor was built to do.Unless You were at the Rock Island plant to inspect every model built in the late 40s early 50s you can say for sure.At any rate it would make a nice piece to add to any ones collection

Tim, I thought so. 150 yearc j i case by wendel on page 292 has one but you can tell for certainn if it has the drop axle with the six spoke cast wheel. It's not at the right angle to tell for sure. If the one on E-Bay is cobbled together, it ought to do about 67 mph on the road.

Makes for fun conversation unless you've got a straight axle one to sell.

Let's keep digging and see what we can find. I e-mailed erb about this. Hope to hear back soon.

My personel experience includes about everythig but the VAH. I've seen enough variancs not to be to dogmattic about anything. If you say they never..... .... Your sure to find out they did.

Have a good one.

Wheat-straw, Your right, It does make for fun conversation, The only thing I like better than working on my 52 VAC-12 is talking about them with other tractor guys.I have seen so many different model configurations its very hard to say for sure. But you can bet I will keep researching the VAH. along with Case tractors.I will keep in touch. Wheel-nut
