On the other hand there is the issue of parts for Case Magnetos....They are really hard to come by. I have a friend with three SCs and he needed all three to come up with one working Magneto.

Paul; I have several NOS coils for the "41" mag used on the "SC". They are $60.00 each. Phone# 315-585-9826. John

Hi John,

I may need one of those. Won't know for a week or so, though. I've got one working mag and two spares that I'm trying to get working.

What are you using to separate the interleaved coils? I have no idea what the Case/Slick special "coil removal tool" looked like- as Yerigan's "How to Restore Tractor Magnetos" chapter on the Case 4JMA magneto says to "see sketch"... except THEY LEFT THE SKETCH OUT OF THE BOOK! (grin)

I've got two different types of these units, as well- one has a metal coil cover cap and a really strong impulse spring.

The other two have bakelite coil cover caps and exposed "wire" type impulse springs. Don't know what other differences there are until I get inside them. I need to fix/replace the impulse spring on one of these wire types.

Mike; I've never had to change a coil, but from what I've read, it ain't easy. The 41 mag has no cover over the body, the body is one piece, and the rear cap secures to it. From my observations I'd have to say that the 41 is a newer style that the JMA. Another point; I've had mags that didn't work, but only needed a good cleaning. Taking connections apart, cleaning and reconnecting. Of course, look at the points also. Good luck, John

Hey John,

Duh, I feel stupid.

When I read that you had magneto coils for sale, I thought you meant OUT OF a '41 tractor... not the later *TYPE 41* magneto!

I guess I need to read these things a little more carefully.

Regards, -Schotte

Hey Mike; I'll bet you don't feel any dumber than I do, I forgot what tire size I had on my "350". Read the post's on CASE TRACTOR close to this post.

Bill; Just had to answer this one. I can think of no advantages of a distributor over a mag. The mag spark is hotter, requires no battery, and virtually trouble free. I have magnetos on my farm in troublefree service for 30 years.

I have to agree with John. I know a lot of people made fun of Case for being old fashioned in the 50's for still having a mag. Of course conventional wisdom is almost always wrong. By the way, the first thing my brother in law always did to his stock car was put a Joe Hunt mag on it so he always had dependable spark. Don

I suspect the only advantage to a distributor was cost. If you have a battery and electrical system on the tractor for elec. start and lights, it's gotta be a lot cheaper to put a distributor than a mag.
