I have been looking at tractors until I'm blue in the face. I've looked at a David Brown 885g, IH484,jd803, and a lot of other stuff. I'm buying 15 acres and will be doing a little road work, putting in my own septic, building a house and mowing. I plan on doing as much of the work myself as possible. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what tractor would be a good all around tractor. I kind of like the idea of an american built classic but don't want to be working on it all the time. Thanks for any info

Jeb the 885G had a gas engine in it. They are too hard to get parts for. Mainly the pistons. If it was a diesel i would have said yes go for it. Tough little tractor.

I owned a 430 Case in the late 60's it had a loader on it I used it all the time A very good tractor. Mine was a Diesel. Before that I had a 510B Utility with gas engine had lots of carburator problems with it. Ray

If anything don't buy the 885G. There getting hard to buy engine parts for. It was almost obsolete in the 80's.

Elmer, What do you think about the Case 430C? The reason I ask is I found a nice one and bought it. I don't know much about them but it sure is a pretty little tractor.

Of those listed, buy the 484. Sounds to me like you are wanting to do dirt work. You might be ahead to buy a skid steer or backhoe. Then sell it when your dirt work is done. You will save a lot of time using the right tool for the job.

James, I like the IH 484 and there is a nice one on the auction at this site but it looks like its going to be over my head on price so I bought a Case 430C. Can you tell me anything about the 430C?

Even though I generally like Cases better than Farmalls - If I had to pick one (1) classic tractor that can do a lot of odd jobs and do them well, I would have to pick the Farmall Super A. For road work, the grading blade that IH made for that tractor can be mounted under the belly and has down pressure. You can, of course, also get a belly mower for it.

Thanks Mr. Amick I found a nice Case 430C and bought it. The diesel was something I decided I should have and hope it will be a good tractor. Do you know much about the 430C.

You will love that 430 deisel, especially if it has a triple or dual range transmission. It is a real tough little beast. It is more like a modern tractor, far beyond a farmall A or C.
