Need a little thought. I recently started an old D up that had been setting for years. I put in new pistons and with plastigauge checked all clearances. While turning the engine over the oil pressure moved up to 30-40 lbs. But just as soon as the engine started the gauge dropped down to 7-10 lbs. Each time I start it it reads high pressure and immediately drops off to below 10. It acts like the bypass is first sticking closed and then once it opens it stays open. After the engine stops it acts like the spring shuts it off again. This all happens in a few seconds from the time I start it. I reached through the side cover and removed the bypass spring. It was quite covered with gum. But I can't get the little plug valve out. Can I run some diesel through the engine instread of oil for a few seconds instead of the oil?

If you can get the spring out, maybe you could spray some carb-cleaner in there to clean it up? Just a thought.

Don, I just filled the crank case with diesel and let is set overnight. I drained out the diesel and put in new oil. It jumped up to 35lbs and stays there. I guess the bypass was just sticking. Thanks for the input.

Good to hear that it wasn't anything major.
