Hello,
I am in the market for a small (about 20 horse) tractor to put a 5 foot mower on. I am partial to cases. So what would be a good case to go with? I would like to be the size of a Farmall A or along the lines. Also, (this may sound outlandish)but would it be possible to tow behind a 1/2 ton truck? Any information would be great!
Thanks,
61Cj5

I use a Case 400 with a 5 or 6 ft mower. it works great in thick stuff it pulls it down alittle but other than that it works great. You should be able to pull a vac 300 400 430 and 500 with a half ton. we pull our 400 and 430 with a dodge dakota just fine on a trailor.

A 300 like this one should do the trick. I found this picture in the tractor photo's section on this page.

You might think about a Case 300. More horses and wide front models are more common than VAC wides.

A VA or VAC with an overrunning clutch and a slip clutch will do you fine .We brush hogged for 20 some years with a 5 foot cutter.

VAC's are plentiful, and little bigger than a Farmall A. They're about 20 hp, and have 3 point hitch.
Weight about 3000 lbs. Yes, you can tow it with a pickup.... on a trailer. Top speed is less than 9mph.
It won't do the wheel bearings any good at much more than that. And as far as pulling at road speeds, who knows what would happen.

Thanks Slowploke. But do VACs have wide or narrow fronts? I would like to find a narrow because in ohio there are some hills.
Thanks,
Chris

The VA series comes wide and tricycle fronts, the stuff after the VA(?) will tell you what it is ,there is an article in the (articles ) column about VAC's and their specs.

if your gonna run a 5 foot bush hog better get more horses than that or youll be going pretty slow in heavy stuff. like a dc or sc 32 horses better get a wide front end for hills. i use a narrow front end here in the hills of pa got the crapola scared out of me a few times. aint partial to wide fronts but they are a lot more stable on dem dare hills

I read here sometime back that the VAC had a weak pto gearing, maybe that was V series and not the VA series. I have a DC, but it would be too much for a 1/2 ton truck. An SC might work ok, still might be a little heavy behind a 1/2 ton. I also have a Farmall B (17 Hp) and it does quit well with a 5 foot bush hog. On a VAC (VA is the wide front) you will have to add a run-on clutch (about 50 bucks). If you have a couple of acres to mow here and there, I think a VA might serve you well.

A VAC is a fine tractor with a 5 ft brush cutter,
but you must buy an overiding clutch which are not hard to find.I have brushhogged with mine for 20 years with a 6 ft brushhog which is a little too big and about 2 years ago had to put in new pto gears, so don,t go any bigger than 5 ft which it should handle easily. Also you should find a
wide front end if your land is hilly. I load mine on a 16ft trailor and 1/2 ton pickup and pulls easily. I have other tractors but VAC is my favorite smaller tractor.
