Why do people remove the serial tags on old tractors.Do they think they'll never need to know these things. I know all these old tractors weren't stolen in there lifetime and ser#'s removed.Damned idiots.

I saw a VAC serial plate for sale on Ebay recently. The guy said he parted the tractor out. I copied the serial number down for reference. My question is: Should this number be listed in the archives as a "known KIA", sort of a final tribute to a faithful old Case that finally succumbed to age and disrepair? Or do we just let the serial tag come to a nefarious end; gracing the dash of a stolen brother?

Hey mj,

I've thought about this question before- I went to a tractor salvage auction in November, and I wrote down all of the serial numbers off of the various Case tractors that were auctioned off that day.

I would say that 85% of these were sold for scrap iron or for parts- and I have been wondering whether or not I should post these serial numbers to the registry under the "parted out" category.

In the end, I didn't do it, because I don't own those tractors. I'd be happy to take the time to register them- if only there was a way for an Owner to "reclaim" that number in the event that someone came along later that had actually rebuilt the machine.

Maybe this is a procedural question for the webmaster Kim.

It's the same people who tear the tags off their mattresses.

I have an SC Case with the Serial # plate missing on the dash, but I do have one--not for my tractor but for an RC. It is soldered to the top of the radiator. It no way matches the bell housing number. RC and SC radiators interchangeable???

Battery acid and knocking off by trees are permissable. just collecting them is not.
This tractor has never been out of service,so it wasn't mistaken for a junker that the tag the only useable part. Some dummy probably has a cool looking key ring tag with J I Case on it

Serial number tags sometimes just fall off. I've seen tags on some old equipment that were just about corroded off from setting out side all the time. That and aluminum doesn't last long if there is ever any battery acid spilled on it. That's why Case put the serial number on the bell houseing flange.

If you know the serial number you might call Jerry Sanders at 708-946-6801. He is with the JICCA and they were making reproduction serial plates. Worth a try.

Thanks.

Captain-

You see people from time to time on Ebay selling old serial number tags, especially the older more intricate brass tags from equipment and machinery.

I think that people who remove the serial number tags from tractors probably fall into (3) categories:

1) People who think that the tags themselves have collector value and want to resell them.

2) People who think that if you bolt another tag onto your tractor from the correct serial number range- then you magically have a "rare" valuable tractor (such as a demonstrator, etc.) from the correct model year.

3) People who remove the tag only because they think the tractor is D.O.A. and they are taking the last removable part of interest or value.

Little do these folks realize that 5-10 years down the road one of us poor fools might actually try and REVIVE that sad old piece of iron... Hence, the missing tag.

(I always felt sorry for the Case folks with tractor models that had their serial number tags mounted onto the side of the tool box- as they are even more likely to have a missing tag.)

Just my opinion, -Schotte

(p.s. - clever name you've got there!)

No, I bought mine without any tags. Sounds like I am not alone in dilemma. Can`t gripe too much,(nobody wants to hear it anyway), bought the tractor to use and didn`t pay much. 540H loader tractor.

Almost equal to scraping the tag with a knife or screwdriver to get the dirt off. I see a lot of it at auctions.
