I have been thinking about the posts on the stolen tractors. It is something that is hard to track and even harder to prevent. Here is my suggestion. Could we create a website or make it part of this one to where EVERYONE I mean FORDS, FARMALL'S, JD, ALLIS, OLIVERS, EVERYTHING... Can post the serial numbers, make, looks of every farm tractor they own. That way when people go to auctions or are looking at buying off someone they can cross check the list and see if it is stolen. Any thoughts?????

Seams to me that the best way to go about this is to have a place to list all stolen equipment. That way we could print it off and check for it. You never know a tractor stolen two years ago might turn up and could be traced.

nice idea, but look at cars they get stolen everyday.
Me I take a lock, shotgun, mean dog... a web site that would be a nightmare to keep up with???

Next the state can issue lic plates and tax the heck out us and then you pay the tax and get your
stuff stolen anyway....

That sounds like a good idea for Kim, maybe you could suggest that over on the site suggestions board. It could be set up like the tractor registry, and you could list serial #'s, location stolen from, special features/modifications, etc...

Good luck. Fireman

Brad,
We would only need a list of the stolen iron. Not all the iron. So the list would not be that large. I actually think this is a pretty good idea. Of course we would have to be the police here. Now the first thing that would happen is that the smart crooks would get our list & take off the SN plates & grind off the SN's of that equipment on the list. Maybe it would deter some theft if they knew we were doing something like this. The value of a lot of our equipment is not like a new tractor & if they knew they could be traced, maybe it would not be worth it anymore.
If we could do something like this it would at least be the start of an awareness that equipment you are buying should be looked at with the 'stolen' aspect in mind.
A person could also put a special number of some kind hidden somewhere on the equipment to further help identify if he were contacted.
Just some thoughts.
Any other suggestions?
Steve

Sounds like a data base that would be so large as to be unreadable. Not to rain on your parade but to be useful it would need to be inclusive. To be inclusive I can't see anybody taking the time to read through it. I wouldn't think most of the stolen iron is being advertised and sold. More likely either broken up for parts or sold as an "add in" to an auction. Most of what I buy at sales are add ins. Nobody came with there heart set to buy it, and you have to make a quick decision on mechanical soundness. Just did some quick math me, my dad, and two neighbors that share work with us have over 300 tractors and pieces of equipment. I can't see me (or anyone else) checking that many serial numbers. I can't even keep up with the serial #'s for what I need parts for.
