Hi Ben:

My VA case had been sitting for a few years in a farm shed. When I went to start it I found that it had stuck valves.

My advice would be to change the oil. Remove the spark plugs and squirt some oil into the cylinders. Turn the engine over with the crank to allow the oil to coat the cylinders. If the engine is free you could do a compression test on each cylinder to determine that the valves are not stuck. You should be able to get 80 psi+ on each cylinder. If everything is ok you then only have to worry about ignition and fuel.

It would be a good idea to clean the fuel tank and the glass separator. In addition you have have to clean the carburetor. Usually, when a motor sits this long it will require attention to the contact points which should be cleaned and reset or replaced as necessary. Make sure the generator is free when you turn the engine.

It would be a good idea to change both the transmission and differential lubricants since they may have water in them.

Good luck
Bob
