Have you done a good/complete cooling system flush?? I had the same sort of problem on an Oliver 77 till I drain it and then filled it with vinagar and ran it till good and hot, let it cool and then flushed it with a garden hose and let the hose run for about and hour. I hooked the hose in to the block drain so it would back flush. The tractors hasn't got hot since and that was 3 years ago.

On my gas engine the temperture sensor bulb is in the head. I think that make mine show a higher temp. Seems head temp would be higher than block.

220 will not hurt it any. With a 7lb radiator cap it will not boil with plain water in it till 343deg and if you run 50/50 anti freeze and water it will go above 250 with out boiling at sea level. As long as exhaust temp is not getting to high 220deg will not hurt it any.
