Hi I am a newbie here,

My dad just got ahold of an SC.. rusty, missing one rear tire, has hand crank sticking out the front, most wires are gone, .... it was cheap...

Crank won't turn...

I dumped about a gallon of old oil in the exhaust manifold , and a cup or so down each spark plug hole... waited a week still won't turn...

Is there hope? Any advice....

It does have a starter should I try it?

Dan

There are some good articles on freeing up stuck engines on the Yesterdays' Tractors Article Archives. One guy uses a mixture of auto trans. fluid, kerosene, and Marvel Mystery Oil. Don't try to turn the engine until you have the valves freed up. You will bend the push rods, if the valves are stuck.

I finally had to take the head off to really get anything done but I do have a suggestion...
With the head off, I jacked up one wheel and blocked it up for the Summer. With the cylinders full of PB Blaster, kero, snake pee, whatever, you can rock that jacked up wheel back and forth (put it in high gear). Eventually I started to see movement. Then I used the log and sledge to get things moving. Runs like a champ now!

Well, Kenny, I might buy one! It's on the auction right now.

Lots of great info has been posted for me on the next page!

I would add something a little thinner like kerosene or remove the oil[just flip the tractor over;)] and put in PB Blaster. Use plenty patience, some of the wise fellows on here say "it takes a long time to get stuck, and it can take a long time to unstick." You may also pull the oilpan and make sure nothing is broke down there. Please do not try the "pull it and dump the clutch" trick, that can usually result in breaking expensive stuff like rods and cranks. Good luck with it! Fireman

The best thing to do with a stuck engine is to first pull the head. This will allow you to see just how bad things are. If the cylinders look good (no rust or pitting) lightly tap the pistons with a block of wood and hammer.

If the cylinders are rusty/pitted, or have water sitting in them (mine always seem to!) you will need to at the very least remove the pistons by force, hone the cylinders, and free the rings.

DO NOT try to turn it over with the starter, this would probably break things.

Today, again, I just took 4 stuck pistons out of a 450 Farmall motor, I had to beat them out with a sledge hammer and a piece of oil well pipe. The sleeves came out with the pistons. Sometimes this is the only way to get an engine apart.

Good luck! Look down towards the bottom of this page, and on the next for good info on SC's.
