Plowing snow today and doing a lot of shifting. The shift lever locked in a forward gear and I can't seem to get it out. Took out four bolts on the shift lever cover, but entire mechanism does not seem to come out. It's apparently not like the SC where the shift lever just lifts out. Seeking advice before I do any more. Would appreciate help on procedures for this.

This occurs on 430-630 Case tractors too. When gears are selected, the shift rail being moved goes under the transmission housing. It's the nature of the beast. Then the gear shift lever comes out of the rail and you're stuck in gear and the lid will not come off. Get a piece of flat stock 1/8" thick, 2" wide, and approximately 12" long. Cut one of the ends on an angle to fashion a pointed tool. Determine which rail is under the housing, insert the tool on the fork on that rail, and gently pry the rail/fork into the neutral position. The cover will then come off. Then you can determine what needs to be done. Perhaps you can weld more material to the gear shift lever end to prevent it from slipping out of the rail.

Well all it takes is knowing where and how to "tinker". Was able to get the third gear rail back to neutral with a long bladed screwdriver--then the cap would come off. Looks like the shift lever slipped between the rails. Did nothing with that for now--but will be a little more careful when shifting. She's up and running again. Thanks loads to you and all the guys.

I took my shift cover off recently. It should come out with all the upper mechanisms and the shift forks.

Mine would not shift in 1'st and 3'rd. Inspection of that "rod" that the shifter travels on for those gears showed bad rust. Cleaned it up best I could, wiggled between 1'st and 3'rd a lot, and eventually got those working.

I'd suggest to pull the cover (it should lift right up) then inspect the shifter and "rods" that the forks travel on and see if that is where your getting bound up.

The lever, plate and shift forks lift out with the 4 bolts removed. You may have to jiggle things around as you lift it out. Once out, put the lever in the neutral position and reposition the gear trains to allow the forks to drop into place.
Good luck.

I've been looking at archive posts and it sounds like a common problem. I did loosen the bolts, but cover would not lift more than an inch or two. I did not want to goof anything up by "fiddling" with it in my ignorance so thought I would consult the "experts" before I did anything else. Anyway it sounds like if I can get the cover off and reposition things, I can resolve the problem. It's a 1949 model with the plug on top of cover plate. One poster said he manipulated things through the hole.
