Elmer,

Any chance you can lay your hands on an engine, or just the block and crank for an 885G?

Just trying to explore options to reduce costs for the rebuild of mine. So far the rebuild kit costs, while a tad high, aren't too bad, but the machinist work that we're gonna need to fix the main cap because of the failed thrust bearing is outrageous.

These guys want $1,000 just to build up the cap and crank and remachine it to spec. That seems awefully high to me.

Good thing we didn't ask them about our other idea of having them build up the crank and cap with bronze and build the thrust bearing in as part of the crank itself....they'd probably want $2000 to do that....

Ugh....this is starting to cost way more than I wanted to spend on a tractor to bush hog my field.
Yet, I've become attached to this damn 885G ;-) I like it...that's all I can say about it. Can't explain it. Guess it's just a "guy" thing. Kinda like wanting that ragged out '73 Camaro Z28 that that the guy is asking 3 times too much for...you know it isn't worth it, but you don't care, you gotta have it...at any cost.... LOL!

I will likely have a crankshaft here, but will have to look for a block.

If the ford is a gas, it will be a good tractor. If it is a diesel, you might want to stay with the DB.

The Ford diesel is just a converted gas block. It just has 3 main bearings. Most other diesels will have a main bearing between each cylinder.

The 880 diesel is more efficient on fuel than the 4000 Ford. I think the 4000 is a good tractor too though.

Ugh. That Ford 4000 was a total piece of junk. Yes, it seems to run ok, but it's got more rust and duct tape on it than an entire junk yard would have in it. The blue paint was all but non existent, everything had rust all over it and all the pedals were bent and out of whack. Someone mounted a high back seat on it that basically sticks your crotch into the steering wheel, so operating the clutch was in interesting feat of acrobatics. I told the guy I'd consider giving him $2000 for it....I don't think he appreciated that much. Not gonna see the 880 until tommorrow....the guy lives 130 miles away and didn't feel like making that trip this afternoon. Somehow I got the feeling it's not gonna be in much better shape.

Sigh. I didn't realize finding a decent used tractor would be such a royal pain in the butt ;-)
I don't expect brand new condition, but then again, I don't want a total rust bucket either. Maybe I'll stick with this 885G, (found a fella in MO that has a block and crank), get it sent here and just grin and bear it on the cost. At least if I do, I know this one will be in excellent shape after that. Except for the motor, this 885G is in really, really good shape, no rust anywhere, about 95% of the paint is still there (although the white is somewhat faded). Pedals, floor boards and all that stuff is straight and true and everything works well.

Damn, I just hate being in this position. Wish I could just go buy one those new Mahindra 4500's and get it over with...but that's $12,000.....

Go for the drive and look at the 880 diesel. If your luck is like mine and you pass it up. It may be a low hour tractor in mint shape. I always end up kicking myself in the butt after i do something like that.
