Being in need of a tractor and having only a limited budget, I made the decision to buy the old tractor. A 1958 Case 801B, single wheel tricycle with the torque converter transmission. As luck would have it, about six months later the converter shredded out. Knowing that all I had at that point was maybe a couple hundred dollars worth of junk if I sold it, I started searching for parts and doing a little digging into the history of Case tractors. I couldn't afford a converter at $1500.00 (guaranteed rebuildable) if I could find someone who could and would do it, I found the next best thing. In doing my research I found out that 1957 - 1958 was a changover year for Case and that 400's became 800's and soforth down the line with little else being changed other than the model numbers. The biggest change for the 800's was the transmission change to the torque converter with lock-out. As luck would have it the local salvage yard had a 57' model 400 with a good trans/rearend for a song and a dance compared to the $1500.00 for a converter. And there inlies my sin, I butchered my tractor using my 800's front half and the back half of an earlier model 400. Thats right folks, I broke it in half, pulled the converter flywheel, put on a regular flywheel, clutch and pressure plate. Bolted that baby together and she's been running as strong as ever for the passed three years. Though I know that I shall forever be condemned in the eyes of the tractor gods, I smile and hold my head high knowing that sometime in the near future the 800's will die as the last good converter will be gone. But my 800/400 will still be running strong.

You just made yourself a homemade 701B, Billy! Nothing in the world wrong with this, I bet it's been done a lot when ye olde farmer got the news he needed to drop $2K in the shop's lap to get the tractor to move again. No doubt there were a few more of these rolling around nobody knew about. Too bad you couldn't have swiped a WFE from the donor, the trike single wheel will be the best mudhole tractor stopper you ever did see!!

As far as I know butchers only disassemble things. I think you need to refer to yourself in the future as a transplant surgeon. As far as I am concerned there are plenty of all original tractors in the world. I find frankenstein tractors to be a little more interesting.

if you like morphadite tractors then you need to come to my father and my farm. we have nearly 24 tractors and none are stock. we have an ih 1066. the 1086 had lots heavier stearing and ta clutch pack so we changed over. we have a 1938 grahambradley that has ford 1 1/2 ton differential and axles cause they were stronger but took some work to make them fit. we have a 52 D with a 2020 Deere carb on it. the new carb has lots bigger jets and gives more power plus it has a round nipple to put a rubber hose on to use a dry aircleaner which is mutch less restrictive than case's own oil bath aircleaner. we have a 29 L with around 14 modifications; it has LA front axle to get the rubber front tires, LA steering to get easier steering with a rubber steering wheel, and a LA trans to get faster and quieter gears and a road gear. none of those conversions took and machining. it also has a model a ford generator to power the lights. enjoy your unique tractors.

I have a tractor in my salvage that I don't even like to admit I have. It is a Massey 22 with a chevette engine and trans in it. Around here we call it the masseychevette. The front end got a little hairy at about 40 mph so I decided to part it out.

I think the God's will be smilling down on you. You just saved another Case tractor from the bone yard.

We have a 400 with a 500 bellhouseing and a 300 tripple range tranny. and a 430 pto the case-o-matic junked out on us. that aint as bad as what CASEPOWER has done to his Case C. As long as it says case and runs it don't matter what modles you cross breed as long as it runs and works. ;)

Now you tell me there are tractor gods!!! I have a Case C with DC, SC, Allis WC, and new holland combine parts on it and I am building a VAH puller with a VAC front. I know the VAH is rare, but all I got was the back. I guess the tractor gods will really give it to me. Maybe even make me drive a deere!!! No now they couldn't be that mean.
