I am in the process of rebuilding my 49 Vac and currently I am reassembling the governor. My governor shows a lot of wear, the plate that the steel balls rest against is grooved, the mushroomed shaped piece that slides over and covers the balls shows some grooves as well the cam gear has wear spots from where it looks like the balls slipped out. My question, is there a good way to resurface these pieces and can they be resurfaced? That backer plate that the steel balls rest against looks easy to turn back smooth in a lathe but will cutting it down affect the performance? Thanks for the help! Case

I just went through the same type problem on a VAC. Motor would hunt terribly. Last winter I overhauled motor. Put in new needle bearing in linkage pivot and refurbished pivot shaft. Worked ok for awhile then same. Recently tore apart again and found flat spots on balls and grooves in inner race. Race fits loose on cam? Rotates? Looked at other VAC governer found race is press fit on cam. Tried race on mine fits loose? Took my old race and peened on camshaft orientated so balls run on clean surface. Also replaced balls. I have not tried it yet!

Sorry I didn't answer your question? Can the inner race be turned on a lathe? Does it have some hardness to it? Does it have to be ground? I don't know, just kind of thinking out loud.

I bought steel balls from McMaster-Carr. If i remember right they were around $15 for a pack of 20 or 25. Maybe if you look around there's better deals. I could sell you my extra's for the price of shipping also if your interested.
