I bought a Case SC and the serial # is a 6-didgit #. It is #503412-SC. I've read the posts on the math-style serial number finder. My serial says 1951. Could this be correct? Thanks for replies

There is another place on the tractor to find the serial number. If you look on the left hand side of the clutch housing by the air cleaner there is a stamped serial number in the casting. Usually it is completely covered by the paint, but it is there.

From 1928 to 1938 case went to a 6 digit serial number where you take the first and fourth number jammed together and subract three. However Case didn't start making SC's until 1941 where the seven digit serial number was in effect. It's math is the first and second number minus 4. I think you've either got a REALLY rare Case or there's another number there that got rubbed out. I think you got a '46 (50 - 4)...

I've read on the forums, that there was a period where case used the 7 and 6 didgit system at the same time.Or, then maybe I need to take a really close look at what I've got. Thanks

My tractor has a similar sound. I haven't addressed it on the board yet--I've had too many other problems to address first. Mine will give that groaning sound when first starting out and then stop. I'm interested in the followups to your questions and how you eventually solve the problem. The sound I get is in any gear and when I engage the clutch. It will eventually stop, but the sound is very loud and grating in the beginning.

I think you should have seven (7) numbers and by the numbers you have I would say its a 1946. The first two numbers and take off 4 and thatas the year.

Were there any Racine built tractors in 1946 due to the strike? This serial no. says there was!

The 6-didgit serial, when using the first didgit and fourth didgit formula suggests this to be a 1951 model.503412 5 and 4 minus 3=51. There seems to be quite a variation of peoples interpretations on the correct 6 and 7 didgit formulas.I found a post, on the Case site, that says with a 6 didgit serial, use #1 and #4 didgits, subtract 3. 7 didgit use first 2#'s subtract 4. There where 2 yrs during production that had 7 didgit #'s but you should use 6 didgit formula.Hope you can follow these ramblings of a confused soul.Anyway are these formulas correct?. Thanks for your time, again.Chuck

According to Eldon and David there were only the D and V series built in 46. Of course all the V's were Rock Island.

Thanks.

No, I'm positive that this number is correct. I've checked the number to the plate by the engine, same thing.
