SC stuff (gear noise)

My mom (at my advice) finally did the right thing and bought an SC for her small farm. It's a 1951, but I don't think that will make a difference in my questions.

Both hers and mine make some "groaning" or "growling" when the clutch is engaged, i.e. when the transmission input shaft is turning. Mom's is pretty bad - runs well, in all gears, PTO okay, as is the hydraulic pump and lift. The noise is present no matter what gear it's in (even neutral), and also makes the noise whether the PTO lever is engaged or not.

Mine is a little different - it only "growls" when the tractor is moving.

The problem with my mom's tractor sounds like an input bearing...I'm a little at a loss with the racket in my SC.

Please comment, guys. Am I correct in my reasoning? Do the input shaft bearings fail often, and are they available( along with the seal, I assume)? What does anyone think about the problem with my SC?

Thanks in advance.

My tractor has a similar sound. I haven't addressed it on the board yet--I've had too many other problems to address first. Mine will give that groaning sound when first starting out and then stop. I'm interested in the followups to your questions and how you eventually solve the problem. The sound I get is in any gear and when I engage the clutch. It will eventually stop, but the sound is very loud and grating in the beginning.

Sounds like bearing to me also. Your moms the input and first two cross shaft. Yours the ring gear cross shaft with the brakes on the end. A good bearing shop should be able to get the bearings and seals with old ones and shaft OD of the seals. Did my DC which is the same design. Some of the double row ball bearings there is a couple choices. Go with the Heavyduty choice.
