I've already asked this, and got one reply, but didn't understand what the poster said...so will try once more.

I am picking up the David Brown 885 tommorrow (that's the good part)...but...

I know it has 4 different ranges on the transmission (with 3 forward and one reverse gear per range).

The range lever is labeled: LS, L, H, HS

Any idea what the "S" stands for? Also, is there anyhting special about the "S" ranges other than they called that that instead of 1,2,3,4 ???

Thanks!

I dont know what the "s" means either, but I am sure glad to be able to match ground speed to engine speed no matter I am doing.

AHA! found out what the "S" stands for... "slow".

High Slow, High, Low and Low Slow.

HS range is a bit slower than H, but still faster than L and LS is the slowest range, so the order of the ranges (slowest to fastest) is: LS, L, HS, H

There is supposed to be a placard or sticker on top of the tractor that shows the speeds for the ranges/gears vs engine RPM, but it is long since faded and can't be read...but talked to a fellow locally that also owns an 885 and he showed me his tractor. I can read the placard on his.

Gear sequence of my tractor:
Gear 1 = LS.1
Gear 2 = LS.2
Gear 3 = HS.1
Gear 4 = L. 1
Gear 5 = LS.3
Gear 6 = HS.2
Gear 7 = L. 2
Gear 8 = H. 1
Gear 9 = HS.3
Gear 10 = L. 3
Gear 11 = H. 2
Gear 12 = H. 3
1 R = LS. R
2 R = HS. R
3 R = L. R
4 R = H. R

regards, Josef
